Before, I only know a little about ID Theft through freecreditreport.com commercials. I now know better about the definition of ID Theft and how serious it can get. It is not only a crime, but it can also has the effect on anybody's credit and life!
I have learned a lot of valuable information about identity theft. I wasn't aware that people actually go through your garbage to find your personal information to steal your identity. It's a great idea to invest on a shredder so that information such as your social security cannot be acquired by a theft.
what i have learned about identity theft is that people should never carry personal documents because if it gets lost, people will take it and used it,and if this ever happens to you,you should contact a police officer or call the FTC's ID Theft Hotline-1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338)and they would help you.
In my Economics class we watched a video called "Deter Detect - Avoid ID". From this i learned a lot of things such as how to avoid identity theft, and how to fix it, if it happened to you.The video gave infromation like don't carry anything with your social security number, becareful with trash, shread your mail/financial documents. If someone stole your identity i also learned that you have to contact your credit report angency, contact crediters where it has been misused, contact police and report the crime and get a copy of the report, contact federal trade comission and close your accounts.
We can also do some steps in case we know that the ID has been stolen by closing your credit accounts, putting a fraud alert to the three credit report companies, reporting to the police, and going to ftc.gov for more information.
@ Karina: I also think shredder is needed not only for offices but also for us at home so we can protect our ID information from being stolen by people that go through garbage.
@ Karina [again]: I also think we should not carry social security number in our wallets because it would be stolen if we accidently lose our wallets. We can protect ourselves by not giving our ID information to anyone through phones or non-secured websites.
TO TRANG:
I was just like you Trang. I only knew about Identity Theft when they sang songs about it in a commercial. But our economics class teaches us more about the issue and how important it is, and also how we can prevent it.
I do agree whit Karina, Many people would would go through your garbage in oder to get your identity!!!
Many people may not take the term Identity theft serious because of the commercials on television that percieve it to be a joke, but in actuality know the importance of avoiding it. Identity theft is when a person steals your identity by taking any identifaction of yours, credit cards, social security cards, your wallet that contains these items. If Identity theft occurs you must act upon it IMMEDIATLEY, contact your credit card companies, the police and fial a report, or the ftc (federal trade commision).
TO TRANG:
I agree with trand it is in fact a crime. You must try your best to avoid it and if it occurs do your best to get rid of it. It can ruin your life, it ends up being a life time of damages that took one person 5 seconds to take.
I think everyone should be careful with there identity and there children's. Anyone can take information from online sites that aren't secure. You should always look for https:// in the URL before giving personal information.
I agree with Katia people should never carry any personal information besides your ID unless you need them that specific day. Your SSN should be memorized and stored in a safe spot in your home with your other personal information.
After watching the video about identity theft, I am now more aware that id theft is a extremely crucial crime that can happen to anyone- anywhere- anytime!!! If we get our identity stolen it can ruin what we have worked for over the years, and can ruin our good name/ credit history. I learned that it's really important to keep our social secturity in a safe place and not carry it around with us because if it's stolen the person can access all our financil/ personal info.
Yeah, i agree with Carmen about our not carrying around our ssn. If our s.s is lost all our info can be accessed which is why we should keep our ss in a safe place and memorize the last 4 digits of our S.S. When we realize that we got our identity stolen we should stop our identity card right away.
I think identity theft is a big problem and can happen easily and thats something I had no idea about. It affects alot of people and every one should be very careful on what you sign, carry in your wallet, and of who is around you. I learned that identity theft is can happen to anybody and that noone is safe from it unless you take the proper precautions.
To Almitra
I agree when you say some people take identity theft as a joke because they think it is not going to happen to them. They need to take a more serious approach to the identity theft situation. They need to take the proper precautions to avoid any problems
I agree with what Almitra and Carmen said. People should take ID Theft seriously and make sure noone is trying to steal their personal information. I also agree with what Trang said, by people going to freecreditreport.com to see their credit repot and see if anything does not seem correct.
Identity theft is not a joke. It can ruin your life. Someone can steal your identity and destroy what you worked for your whole life in just a matter of months.
I Can relate to what Karina is saying. A criminal would do anything to commit a crime. Finding out personal information about about some the easiest way to do so is looking through ones trash for mail credit cards etc...
